Two Burchell’s (Plains) Zebras, Equus quagga burchellii, in an ‘affectionate’ pose. Photogaphed in the Xakanaxa area of the Moremi Game Reserve in northern Botswana.
Burchell’s Zebra is the most southern of six subspecies of Plains Zebra identified by a 2004 study, although a 2018 DNA study disputes the division into races, but posits a north-south continuum. It can be idenified by distinct shadow stripes on its haunches. These shadow stripes are not normally seen on the head, neck and withers.
