A White-tailed Eagle (fka White-tailed Sea Eagle), Haliaeetus albicilla, in flight above bushes. Danube Delta, Romania.
White-tailed Eagles are massive, with a wingspan of about 2.5m / 8′, lending them the affectionate name of ‘flying barn door’ in the UK. They are the world’s sixth-largest eagle.
They have a variety of food, including fish, birds, small mammals and carrion. They have been known to steal prey from other birds.
White-tailed Eagles have been successfully re-introduced to Scotland, and are being reinroduced to areas of England and Ireland, following decades of persecution leading to their extinction in the British Isles.
