The Roman Amphitheatre in the archeological park in the centre of Fiesole, Tuscany, Italy.
Fiesole is a Tuscan town, only 5km from Florence, which has a dramatic history. It was founded by the Etruscans c800BC, then taken over first by the Romans in 283BC, then by the Florentines in the 14th century.
The amphitheatre was built at the end of the first century BC and the beginning of the first century AD. It is built in traditional Greek style (semi-circular cavea) of the stone which was excavated to build it. Systematic excavations were begun in 1870. Inter alia, these discovered a scaena frons (architectural stage design), which show the theatre was still being used in the 3rd century AD.
Nowadays the Teatro is used to host a summer festival, the Estate Fiesolana, which runs from June to August each year.
