Tawny Eagle

A Tawny Eagle, Aquila rapax, in Buffalo Springs National Reserve, part of the semi-arid Samburu Complex of reserves in the north of Kenya, East Africa.

Tawny Eagles are medium sized eagles of very varied plumages, from blonde to reddish-brown to dark brown. They have a wide, disjunct distribution over most of Africa except deserts and rainforests and also in the Indian sub-continent.

Tawny Eagles are opportunistic feeders of a variety of prey – small mammals, birds, reptiles and insects – and carrion. They feed from perches or from diving from a high height while flying. They are also piratical on other raptors, particularly Bateleurs.
