Wild African Elephant, snorkelling

A wild bull African Elephant, Loxodonta africana, swimming in the Chobe River, northern Botswana, using its trunk as a ‘snorkel’.

In the dry season, when there is little vegetation worth eating in Chobe National Park, the elephants have to swim over to a reedy island in the Chobe River to find fresh grass to eat. As the river is deeper than they height of even the tallest African Elephant, they have to swim, which they seem to be able to do with surpirsing ease and grace!
