Plaza de España, Sevilla

Locals and tourists relaxing on a warm and sunny April day in Seville’s Plaza de España, which was designed by Anibal Gonzalez and completed in 1929 as the Pabellon de Andalucia, the centrepiece of Expo 29. There was an extensive refurbishment of the Plaza in 2010. The Plaza is part of Maria Luisa Park and is free to enter and enjoy.

The main buildings, were built in a semi-circle, with features such as a canals and bridges in the middle. Visitors can hire little rowing boats to row along the canal, which goes most of the way around the outside of the plaza.

A popular feature of the Plaza is the little alcoves, tiled with traditional azulejos, representing each province of Spain. Visitors from Spain like to have their photo taken in their home province’s alcove.
