Scottish Parliament Building

Part of the Scottish Parliament Building in Holyrood at the bottom of the Royal Mile. This image features the Media Tower. The dark shapes on the exterior of the building are “open to interpretation” but are said to represent curtains.

It was designed by a team headed by Spanish Catalan architect Enriq Miralles, and completed by his wife Benedetta Tagliabue, in conjunction with the Edinburgh-based RMJM (EMBT/RMJM). The contract was awarded in 1998, and following a series of ‘unfortunate events’, including the death of the lead architect, the building was officially opened, over time and vastly over budget on 9th October 2004.

Despite the controversy about the budget and many aspects of the construction process, the building has won nine awards for architecture.
