A male Reticulated Giraffe, Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata, or Giraffa reticulata, in Buffalo Springs National Reserve in northern Kenya, East Africa.
Giraffe systematics are in flux at the moment, but the general view, although not shared by the IUCN, is that there should be four species of Giraffe, of which Reticulated would be one of the distinct species, having no subspecies. All Giraffe species and subspecies are Red-Listed as ‘Endangered’ as they have declined dramatically over the past 35 years.
Arguably the most beautiful of all the Giraffes, Reticulated Giraffes are found in Northern Kenya, where they are seen most easily in the Samburu Complex of reserves, of which Buffalo Springs NR is part. They are also found in south-western Somalia and southern Ethiopia.
Reticulated Giraffes have a rich, reddish brown colour, overlaid by a creamy-white network pattern.
