Male Reed Bunting

An alert male Reed Bunting, Emberiza schoeniclus, not quite in full summer plumage, perched on a branch. Although quite similar to House Sparrows, males in Spring and Summer is easy to identify, given a decent view, because of the head pattern, mostly black. However, the females need a closer look, as, lacking the black head, they are more like typical ‘lbj’s.

Their natural habitat is marshes and reedbeds, but they are also fund in open farmland where they can feed on grains. They sometimes come into gardens in hard winters.
