Paisley Abbey is an active Church of Scotland church building, in the centre of the city of Paisley in Renfrewshire, Scotland. William Wallace was educated by the priors there in the twelvth century, and it is the “Cradle of the Royal House of Stewart”.
It was built on the site of a 6th century Celtic Church. The current building originated in 1245, but is largely a 14th century restoration, following an extensive fire in 1307. In the 16th century, the tower collapsed, destroying then transept and choir which were only restored at the turn of the 20th century.
A continuing series of restorations and renovations has continued into the 21st century.
