Musee d'Orsay, interior

The Musée d’Orsay is one the most popular museums in Paris. It stands in the centre of the city, on the south bank of the River Seine (la Rive Gauche), opposite the Jardin des Tuileries. It contains artworks dating from 1848 – 1914. It is particularly known for its collection of Impressionist Art, including 86 works by Claude Monet.

The architecture of the museum could be considered to be its first work of art. The building was originally a railway station, the Gare d’Orsay, to serve the Exposition Universelle (Paris Exposition), by bringing visitors close to the main exhibition sites. It was designed by Victor Laloux and started in spring 1898. Teams of workers worked day and night to complete the station and the lines leading into it. It was opened, with its linked hotel, in July 1900.

“The station is superb and resembles a Palace of Fine Arts.”
