McManus Museum

The North Entrance of the McManus Museum in Dundee, Scotland, with its circular staircase designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott.

Scott designed the building, originally the Albert Institute, to house a library on the ground floor, and a hall, called the Albert Hall, on the second floor, to which this was the entrance. The original Albert Institute was completed in 1868, with extensions built, designed by others but in keeping with Scott’s work, in phases over the next twenty years. Scott considered the Albert Institute to be one of his best works, and a predecessor to his University of Glasgow building.

In style I have followed that of the best period of pointed architecture, taking pains to give it such national characteristics as render it distinctly Scottish in its general feeling.

The building originally had to be supported on wooden pillars, as the ground it was built on was too boggy to support its weight. These were replaced by concrete piles in 1979. The building now serves as a museum and art gallery.
