Male Kingfisher with fish

A male Common Kingfisher, Alcedo atthis, perched on a branch with a fish in its beak, photographed in Ultima Frontiera, in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, in the far east of Romania on the border with the Ukraine.

I was on a specialist Wildlife Photograpy trip when I photographed this Kingfisher from a little pop-tent hide near its nesting hole. The good thing about Kingfishers is that the pair call loudly to each other as they’re approaching the nest, which helps when you’re looking through an opening in the canvas which exactly matches your lens, so you have a tiny field of view. The challenge then is working out which branch the bird has landed on. Sometimes they landed on a branch directly above my head, and called from there – no chance to photograph them there!
