The very distincitve ventral (under) side of the tail fluke of a Humpback Whale, Megaptera novaeangliae, as it deep dives in Trinity Bay, Newfoundland, Canada.
Every Humpback Whale has its own recogniseable ventral tail fluke, which can be differentatiated by proportion and pattern of light and dark colours, bite marks from e.g. Orcas, shape of trailing edge, etc. These are sure identifiers, just like human fingerprints. As they often reveal the underside of their tail flukes when deep diving, it has been possible to build up a catalogue of humpback whales, which – by photographic records – can help to monitor the movements of these sea mammals.
