A European Goldfinch, Carduelis carduelis, calling from a snow-covered branch in winter. I used to see these birds quite rarely, but then as a species they seemed to change their behaviour, not only coming into the garden in good numbers, especially in spring, but also being readily seen in a variety of habitats from city centres to shorelines.
In Italian Renaissance Art, the Goldfinch was a common symbol of several aspects of Christianity, but following the Plague / Black Death, it was a symbol of healing and redemption.
