Gaur, or Indian Bison, Bos gaurus, are the largest of the world’s wild cattle – buffaloes and bisons. In India, they are found in the centre of the country and the areas around the Western Ghats. They are also found in fragmented areas of South-East Asia. Herds of wild Gaur are led by matriarchs.
Where they are protected, Gaur are generally calm around people. This one, in Tadoba National Park in Maharishtra, central India, was resting at the side of the road. Although they are protected throughout their range, and are thriving in reserves, their numbers have been globally decreasing for decades, and they are Red-listed as Vulnerable.
