A section of the Grand Canal, Canalezzo, which flows through the centre of Venice, Italy.
The canal winds in a reverse-S shape through the centre of the main island on which the city stands, and is the city’s main water-highway with both passengers and goods passing up and down at all times.
On each side of the canal there are beautiful, large palazzos from the Serenissima (the most serene Republic of Venice, 697 AD – 1797 AD). These colourful buildings mostly date from between the 12th and 17th centuries. The Grand Canal has been the main route through the city since the Middle Ages.
