Canyon de Makis and Canyon de Rats

Two canyons carved into the sandstone rocks of Isalo National Park in Madagascar. The one on the left of the photo (shaped like a wine glass) is the Canyon des Makis and the one on the left (shaped like a beer glass) is the Canyon des Rats.

The Canyon des Makis is a popular hiking trail along a level trail with lots of interest to see en route (best experienced with a local guide who will show and interpret many things you might otherwise miss). The main picnic area if often frequented by Ring-tailed Lemurs, Red-fronted Lemurs and Verreaux’s Sifakas. Hold onto your bananas!

The Canyon des Rats hiking trail takes you to a former royal village, complete with the ruins of a palace wall, royal baths and burial places.
