A Blue Glassy Tiger Butterfly, Ideopsis similis exprompta, on a flower, photographed in Mirissa, South-west Sri Lanka.
Although A. similis is referred to as Ceylon Blue Glassy Tiger, it is confined to the extreme south-west of Sri Lanka, around the town of Galle, and inland to about 36km. It is also found in much of South-east Asia and Japan.
Its favourite foodplants are milkweeds and dogbanes, which makes them poisonous to predators, and some other non-toxic butterflies imitate their appearance.
When attacked, this species fakes death and oozes a revolting tasting and smelling liquid.
