Bengl Tiger, walking

A wild Bengal Tiger, Panthera tigris, walking through Kanha National Park, Madhya Pradesh, central India.

Kanha National Park (gazetted in 1955) is one of India’s 51 designated Tiger Reserves (since 1973), and one of the reserves which gives visitors the best chance of seeing tigers, as well as a wide range of other fauna and also flora.

Sadly, however, preserving Tiger habitat, in Kanha and other reserves, has not been free of controversy, as it has involved local tribes being displaced without compenstion, leaving them effecively destitute, according to Survival International. This older statement by WWW-India on People and Protected Places sets out their plans to ensure that Protected Areas should provide a wide range of social, environmental and economic benefits to people and communities, the the later reports suggest it hasn’t been happening according to the ideals set out.
