When we arrived at Ol Tukai Lodge in Amboseli National Park in southern Kenya, we were delighted to find that a pair of African Hoopoes, Upupa africana, had nested under the thatched roof of our chalet and were feeding well-grown young. The next day, I found this adult feeding a chick on the grass just outside the chalet, so I was delighted to lie on my stomach on the ground to get this photo.
I took this photo quite some time ago: the original is a 35mm slide. At that time, this species was known as African Hoopoe and regarded as a full species. Then it was lumped back in with Eurasian Hoopoe, but now it is regarded as a full species again, together with the Madagascan Hoopoe.
