The classis Metro sign at Abbesses, Paris, France

Classic Art Nouveau Metropolitain sign for the Paris Metro at Abbesses, by the artist Hector Guimard (1867-1942).

This Metro entrance is one of only three remaining of its type, the others being the similar, but not identical, examples at Porte Dauphine and the entrance Chatelet Metro Station at Place Sainte-Opportune. This one features a glass roof and canopy with a dark-green painted cast iron structure featuring an Art Nouveau motif.

The Place des Abbesses name derives from the Royal Abbey of Montmartre which was run by nuns, but destroyed during the French Revolution.

This metro entrance was originally at the Hotel de Ville metro station but was moved to Place des Abbesses in 1974.
