Window of Isalo

The Window of Isalo, a naturally eroded hole in sandstone rock, photographed at sunset.

The Window of Isalo is one of the best-known landmarks of Isalo National Park in south-west Madagascar. Isalo is a large open national park, much used for trekking. Although 14 animal species, 24 amphibians, 47 reptiles and over 100 birds have been recorded within the park, many in the canyons, it is particularly of interest for its geological (sandstone) features (it has been called the ‘Colorado of Madagascar’) and flora (over 400 species of plant, over 70% of these endemic to Madagascar.
