Sandstone rock, Arches National Park

A natural red sandstone rock formation, looking like Nefertiti, at the entrance to the ‘Park Avenue’ area of Arches National Park, Utah. Another image from a long time ago, scanned from a 35mm slide.

‘Queen Nefertiti’ is a balanced rock, and like most of the other monoliths in the ‘Park Avenue’ hiking trail is carved from the Slick Rock / Slickrock Member of Entrada Sandstone. This rock was formed from coastal dunes and is prone to vertical fracturing. Its joints weather easily, then water seeps into fractures and dissolves the calcite cement which held the sandstone together.

The Slickrock lies on top of the Dewey Bridge formation, which was formed from historic tidal flats from a long-gone shoreline which has a ‘wavy’ appearance because it erodes irregularly.
