Architectural detail of a pillar in Mumbai International Airport – Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport Terminal 2 – which was designed with several regional references, including the peacock’s tail.
Desgined by the American team Skidmore Owings & Merrill (SOM) the design of the ‘coffered ceiling’ was inspired by the shape of traditional Indian pavilions, while also referencing the airport’s symbol, the peacock.
“We designed an airport that is intimately connected to its surrounding, By subtly incorporating regional patterns and textures at all scales, Terminal 2 resonates with a sense of place and serves as a spectacular symbol for India and Mumbai.”
Roger Duffy, SOM Partner
