On my last day on my first safari in Botswana I went on a boat trip on the River Chobe. I was particularly hoping to see a Black Heron fishing. I asked the captain if we were likely to see one, and he said yes. But I couldn’t help noticing that he kept looking backwards towards the shore of the wide river.
Not long afterwards, a group of bull African Elephants came down to the river and started to swim across towards Sedudu Island, which is what the captain had been hoping for. Chobe National Park is very dry in July, but there is still lush vegetation on the island.
The river is 15′ deep at this point, and the tallest bull African Elephant is 13m tall, which is how it was established that the bulls are actually swimming, and not just wading. One of the two here has its trunk up in ‘snorkel’ mode.
