La Défense is “Europe’s largest purpose-built business district”. It is located about three miles west of the city boundary (still served by the Métro) and covers an area of about 1,400 acres. Almost 200,000 workers work there, and because of features like the modern architecture and open air art museum it is also a popular tourist destination.

The Grande Arche de la Defense was designed by the Danish Architect Johan Otto von Spreckelsen as a result of a competition. It is on the Axis (Axe historique) of Paris, which starts from the Louvre and now is extending towards the River Seine at Nanterre. The Grande Arche is 110m tall. Following a seven-year closure, the roof section, which contains a viewing area, a restaurant and a photojournalism gallery, was re-opened to the public in 2017.
