Sambar is a species of deer widespread over India, south-east Asia and South China. It has also been introduced to Australia and New Zealand, and there is a small herd in St Vincent Island, Florida. The latter three introduced populations are considered as hunting prey.
Sambar Deer are IUCN listed as ‘Vulnerable’ as the species is declining through most of its natural range, through a variety of human threats. It is also a favourite prey of Bengal Tiger and Asiatic Lion.
