Dark portrait of a European Shag

I photographed this European Shag, Phalacrocorax aristotelis, on a dark, gloomy day on the Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast of north-east England, and decided to play up the moodiness of the image in this rendering of the portrait. This was actually a fun image to make.

The Farnes Islands are always interesting to visit, and in summertime there are breeding terns, gulls and ducks, and seals in the water and loafing around the shorelines. Sometimes rare migrant birds show up on one of the islands. Boats are run out of the busy harbour in the small coastal town of Seahouses.
