Indian Wild Dog, or Dhole, Cuon alpinus, was a key species I wanted to see on my last trip to India, and the most likely place to see them was Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh in central India. However, the species is endangered, so there was no guarantee of success in locating them. So my group was very fortunate on day to happen to be allocated the zone where a family of Dholes were active next to the road and spent quite a lot of time oblivious to their thrilled observers.
This lesser-known species has a decreasing population and faces many threats, and studies suggest that there are fewer mature Dholes left in the wild than there are Tigers. The species is Red-listed as Endangered, yet very little is being done to protect them or their habitat.
