Blue Salamis Butterfly, Salamis temora or Protogoniomorpha temora, aka Blue Mother-of-Pearl Butterfly, in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda, East Africa.
This woodland butterfly is a species of the largest Butterfly family, the Nymphalidae. It is distributed across the centre of Africa, from Nigeria to Eritrea, in dense forests.
This beautiful butterfly has appeared on the postage stamps of several countries, including Mozambique, Union Island, Lesotho, Sierra Leone and Tanzaina, as well as Uganda.
Salamis was a nymph in Greek mythology, a personification of Nature. She daughter of the river god Asopus and Metope, who herself was the daughter of another river god. Poseidon took Salamis to an island and seduced her. The island and its main town of Salamis are both named after her.
