Painted Stork

A Painted Stork, Mycteria leucocephala, standing in a marsh in Yala National Park, Sri Lanka.

Painted Storks are large wading birds which are found throughout most of the Indian subcontinent south of the Himalayas, and also in the eastern coastal strip of Asia and in small pockets in South Asia.

They get their name from the bright pink flight feathers (tertials) of adult birds. Juvenile birds are much duller and don’t have the pink feathers.

They feed by submerging their half-open beaks in shallow water and sweeping them from side to side, snapping up any prey they sense.
