Two Blue Tits, Cyanistes caeruleus (fka Parus caeruleus), perching in a Rowan Tree (aka Mountain Ash) Sorbus sp.
Blue Tits are small passerines, easily identifiable by their blue cap. They are found in 98% of British gardens, and loved for their colourful appearance and acrobatic antics. They are agile birds and can easily hang upside-down to get food.
Their natural habitat is woodlands, but they have adapted very well to gardens, even in towns and cities. They are tolerant of humans, happily taking food from a variety of feeders, where they happily take seeds and fats, or peck from fresh coconut halves. They can be persuaded to feed from the hand in very cold snowy or icy weather, when natural food (caterpillars, insects and seeds) is difficult to access.
Blue Tits also take to suitable nextboxes, and start exploring possible nesting sites in January.
