Riverside Museum, Glasgow, Scotland

The front of the zinc-roofed Riverside Museum, Glasgow’s Museum of Transport, which was designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, and opened in 2011. It stands on Pointhouse Quay, in the Glasgow Harbour district of Glasgow.

The museum houses much of the collection of the former Glasgow Museum of Transport, which was located at Kelvin Hall. One notable addtion is a SAR Class 15F 4-8-2 steam locomotive which was built in 1945 at Polmadie Works.

There are over 3000 objects housed in the multi-award-winning museum (including European Museum of the Year 2013), from skateboards and prams via trams to cars, motorbikes and a fire engine. There is also a range of interactive and displays interpreting Glasgow’s maritime and shipbuilding past.

The large windows of the museum front reflects the Tall Ship, Glenlee, the UK’s only floating Clyde-built sailing ship, which is moored beside it on the River Clyde.

The Riverside Museum is derived from its context. The historic development of the Clyde and the city of Glasgow is a unique legacy. Located where the Kelvin joins the Clyde, the museum’s design flows from the city to the river; symbolizing a dynamic relationship where the museum is the voice of both, connecting the city to the river and also the transition from one to the other. The museum is situated in very context of its origins, with its design actively encouraging connectivity between the exhibits and the wider environment.
