Beautiful yellow eyes of a male Snowy Owl, Bubo scandiacus, staring out straight towards me from fluffy white feathers. A really gorgeous and impressive bird, it is a diurnal true owl, with a cirumpolar range through all the Arctic regions, migrating further south in winter, with vagrants sometimes ranging south in Summer.
A pair of Snowy Owls bred on Fetlar, one of the Shetland Isles, between 1967 and 1975, after which the male disappeared, though female birds (which are larger and darker/more mottled) were seen for several years afterwards. Other than that, they are uncommon migrants to the UK.
