Living in Scotland, I’m used to Ospreys, Pandion haliaetus, nesting in mainly conifer trees, e.g. Scots Pine at the RSPB’s well-known Loch Garden Osprey viewing site.
However, I had heard that Ospreys nest on beaches in Australia, and I know that the bird is present over most of the world.
While visiting the tiny Pacific island of San Benitos Oueste, off the coast of Baja California, Mexico, I saw a pair of Ospreys putting the finishing touches to their nest on the beach. It was interesting to see that just like in trees in Scotland, its Mexican beach nest was a huge, untidy pile of sticks.
San Benitos Oueste is the largest of the three Islas San Benitos. It is seasonally inhabited by fishermen.
