Steam train going over viaduct

Jacobite Steam Train over Glenfinnan Viaduct

The Jacobite Steam train heading over the Glenfinnan Viaduct en route to Fort William from Mallaig.

Glenfinnan Viaduct is a 21 arch mass concrete viaduct constructed at the very end of the 19th century, when it cost a little under £19,000. It is a beautiful work of engineering and was popular as a Scottish icon before it was featured in TV series such as Monarch of the Glen and The Crown as well as movies like Ring of Bright Water and four Harry Potter movies. The company which owns and runs the Jacobite provided the steam engine and carriages for the Hogwarts Express, by which name this train is unofficially known, and the viaduct is also known, even by Google, as the ‘Harry Potter bridge’.

The Jacobite Steam Train runs from Fort William to Mallaig and back twice most days in summer. This photo was taken from the rear carriage. Note that the views of the viaduct are from the left hand of the train as you travel towards Mallaig, and as the locomotive is moved and reversed for the return journey, but the carriages are not, your seats look out onto the same side in both directions. Actually, the left hand side has most of the best scenery, except perhaps between Arisaig and Mallaig. It’s a fun journey, far more pleasant in First Class where a substantial afternoon tea (could easily be shared between two) can be ordered in advance and enjoyed during the journey.
